J-Serve is the annual day of service for Jewish youth throughout the world. It is a day on which Jewish teens join their counterparts in other faith communities, other cities and other countries in giving of their time to serve the communities in which they live.

Below are just a few inquiries we have received from people around the country:

What types of service projects are typically done on J-Serve?

J-Serve service projects range from cleaning up local parks to spending an afternoon with children with special needs to feeding and clothing the less fortunate. In short, there is no one single type of J-Serve project. J-Serve encourages you to determine the specific needs unique to your community and do something you are passionate about.

I would like to start a project in my own community. How do I decide what type of project to do?

We recommend two ways to get started. The first method involves taking the time to figure out what your community needs. A second method is to gather a coalition of teens and/or organizations who will be participating in J-Serve and discuss what motivates you. Once you begin either or both of these processes, deciding what type of J-Serve project is right for you will come easily.

Luckily, J-Serve has many online resources to help you answer these questions. Please visit our resources page for assistance.

How do I find a J-Serve project going on in my community?

The best way to see if there is a project already underway in your hometown is to search through this year’s projects. If you do not see your community listed on this page, do not despair! E-mail David Wallsh at J-Serve to learn about projects that may not be on the website.

Who else is participating in J-Serve?

Jewish teens from all over the United States and Canada take part in J-Serve. Last year 5,000 teens participated. Yet, J-Serve is more than just Jewish teens doing service. It is the Jewish piece of a larger movement, part of Youth Service America’s National and Global Youth Service Day. Each year millions of teenagers all over the world participate in National and Global Youth Service Day, including your peers from different faith communities in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia.

J-Serve has been generously underwritten by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Awards Committee, the Lippman Kanfer Family Foundation and the Estelle Friedman Gervis Family Foundation.
